Self-directed Projects

For Home Learning this term the students in Harakeke had to work on a self-directed project. This had to involve new learning and a challenge. Here are a sample so far:
Jade learnt how to knit and created this beautiful hat.
Maya wanted to run 5km in less than 30 minutes and actually managed to record a time of just over 28 minutes.  Wow!
Tayah, Ava and Tayla all brought in some baking for us to try.  They passed the 'taste' test.  Mmmm!
Mia drew this map of NZ and highlighted places that were important to her family.
Cade baked this amazing chocolate cake for us!
Gabby research her family tree.

Here is Missy after she has cooked a meal of friend rice for her family.

Joel and his Dad conquered the Grampians

Charlotte researched the solar water heating that was being installed for her family pool.
Vinny built this amazing enclosure for his quails with a little help from his dad.

Evie wanted to find out if people could work out if a cake was home made or if the recipe came from a packet.  Most of the students guessed wrong and they liked the packet cake best!

Tree Planting

Here we are planting trees along the motorway.  It was pretty challenging and Mrs DG looked like she was on a pogo stick every time she tried to dig a hole!  Thanks to all our wonderful parent helpers and the guys from NCC.

Maths with Nikau

Last Thursday we went to Nikau to do some Maths with them.  We used lots of different maths skills to work out a measurement problem.

We made boats out of paper and then placed marbles in each boat.  We worked out how many we could put in the boat until it sunk from the weight.

Our next step was to work out how heavy each marble was.  For this we needed to use our scales and measure 10 marbles, we then divided this total by ten to get the average.  We worked out each marble was 4 grams.

The last thing we tried was halving the size of our paper to make smaller boats and estimating how many marbles it could carry.

All is all it was a great problem solving activity.  Many thanks to our buddies from Nikau.  Below are some photos showing our learning.
